Spectacular and unique Botticino marble High Relief, depicting the lion of St. Mark with carved on one side a very important motto “ Ti con nu, nu con ti” indicating a relevant speech made by Count Giuseppe Viscovich (Perasto, 1728 - Perasto, 1804). Magnificent depiction of the Serenissima, original and exclusive work, the lion is depicted with an open book and sword. Provenance Venice, private collection. Giuseppe Viscovich was an Italian military man, the last Venetian captain of Perasto (now in Montenegro), the last territory remaining loyal to the Serenissima. More than three months after the fall of the Venetian republic at the hands of the French, the citizens of Perasto gathered in front of the city captain's palace to bury the banner of the Serenissima. In front of the kneeling crowd, Captain Giuseppe Viscovich delivered a speech in Serbo-Croatian Slavonic: the Perasto Oath, otherwise known as Ti co nu, nu co ti (in the Venetian translation). The expression Ti con nu, nu con ti would be taken up in 1919 by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio in his Letter to the Dalmatians published in Venice, in which he urged Venetians and Dalmatians to insurrection for the annexation of the former territories of the Serenissima to the Kingdom of Italy, and would be the motto of the “Squadron (Air) of St. Mark” or “la Serenissima” he commanded. The work is of sublime quality, elegant and refined marble veining and patina. The dimensions are very generous indeed, proportionate and of considerable weight. Perfect if hung on the wall with the help of some irons. The work is more unique than rare, lot of great prestige and noble value. It is in excellent overall condition, undamaged.
